Class Debate from Friday
I think we can agree that the debate held on Friday went very well. Although we all couldn’t come to an agreement I respect everyone’s choice on whether a Mosque should be built near ground zero or shouldn’t. I think people need to look more at facts as opposed to their own opinions. One of my classmates said that he was afraid that a Mosque near ground zero would attract more Muslims when clearly that shouldn’t be a concern since they are one of the fastest grown religions in the U.S. They also vote in higher numbers and contribute politically to our nation. We can’t label someone as being wrong or right but facts do play a big part on debating. I don’t understand how some students said “I’m not racist I just don’t want them to build a Mosque near ground zero”. We can’t go against our Constitution or the first Amendment that grants the freedom of religion. Who are we to tell someone that they can’t build a place of worship? We all have the same rights and I think that’s something many people need to realize. We can’t segregate them because people who share the same religious value as them did something vial to this country.
